Plenty of famous bands have come out of Hamilton, but few have the mystique of Simply Saucer. Back in the early 1970s, Simply Saucer's music channelled artists such as the Velvet Underground, the Stooges, Can, and Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd. While those artists are considered important today, they weren't particularly popular back then. Simply Saucer, with their wild improv freak-outs and space synthesizers, were not headed for the pop charts. Over time, Simply Saucer became a sort of rock 'n' roll legend, a misty rumour -- a brilliant band that could have been influential, except that almost no one had seen or heard them. That changed in 1989 when Bruce (The Mole) Mowat unearthed a combination of studio and live tracks and released Cyborgs Revisited on vinyl LP. Now, decades after they disbanded, plenty of people have actually heard Simply Saucer -- but still few have seen them play. Original members Edgar Breau and Kevin Christoff were always the core of the continually rotating line-up; now they're joined by Joe Csontos on drums, Steve Foster on guitars and keys and Dan Winterman on theremin, guitars and electronics. theyt will play live on EXD on Sunday May 27th followed by an interview done by Imants Krumins. |
